Is My Baby Ready For Solids?

ree

The first year with your baby is full of “firsts,” and starting solids is a big one! Exciting? Yes. A little intimidating? Also yes. But don’t worry, you’ve got this.

Why Do Solids Matter?

In the beginning, solids aren’t about replacing breastmilk or formula (those remain your baby’s main source of nutrition until their first birthday). Think of solids as a bonus round—a time for your baby to explore and practice.

Here’s what solids help with:

  • New experiences: Tasting, smelling, and touching foods in playful ways.

  • Skill-building: Practicing chewing, swallowing, and tongue movement.

  • Positive food relationships: Early exposure sets the stage for adventurous, confident eaters.

  • Self-feeding foundations: Little by little, your baby learns independence at mealtimes.

By the time your baby turns one, solids will start to take the lead nutritionally. This early exploration is what sets them up for that transition.

Signs Your Baby Is Ready

Every baby develops at their own pace, so it’s less about the calendar and more about what your little one can do. Classic readiness cues include:

  • Sitting upright with good head and neck control

  • Reaching for food or showing interest in what you’re eating

  • Bringing toys (or food!) to their mouth

  • Opening their mouth when food comes near

Many babies show these signs around 6 months old, but this is unique to each child. Always check in with your pediatrician before starting.
